How to care for your bumboozled nappies...

  • We recommend washing all nappies prior to use. This will ensure that any residue left from the manufacture of the fabric is removed.

  • The hemp inserts and boosters require 3 hot washes, prior to use, to allow for shrinkage - they will then fit your bumboozled nappies perfectly. They will not reach maximum absorbency until approx. 10 washes. The bamboo inserts and boosters require only 1 hot wash, prior to use, to shrink to the correct size.

  • Most people these days ‘dry pail’ their nappies. This simply means storing your wet and soiled nappies in a dry nappy bucket until washing day.

  • For pooey nappies, scrape or shake soiling into toilet, remove insert and then rinse nappy before placing in your nappy bucket. Small amounts of residue will be removed in the wash.

  • Never use fabric softener of any kind on your bumboozled nappies. Liquid fabric softeners and dryer sheets both leave a waxy residue which will cause the suedecloth to repel liquid, and decrease the absorbency of your inserts.

  • Nappy rash creams can also cause repelling. If you do need to use a barrier cream, please place a liner in your nappy. A scrap of polar fleece or microfleece fabric makes a cheap and easy reusable liner.

  • Please do not use any bleaches or soakers, as these may damage the nappy fabrics, cause skin irritation, and are unnecessary. The combination of hot water and washing powder will ensure that any bacteria is removed, and that your nappies are sanitized. Drying in the sun (well, UV light actually) also acts as a sanitizer.

Washing instructions...

  • Remove inserts from pockets before washing.

  • Fold back the laundry tabs. This should prevent nappies catching on other items in the wash.

  • For a thorough wash, run nappies through a cold rinse cycle (or short soak in cold water) before your regular wash.

  • We recommend washing nappies with hot/warm water.

  • Use only ½ or less the recommended amount of washing powder/detergent. Using too much will result in detergent residue on your nappies, which can cause repelling, reduce absorbency and cause skin irritation.

  • Make sure that your nappies are rinsed well, to ensure that all detergent is removed.

  • Where possible, dry your nappies on the line in the sun. The sun acts as a natural stain remover for any marks that may remain on your nappies.

  • Tumble drying is OK, however not recommended for use every time, as it can reduce the life of your nappy, particularly the elastic and touch tape.

‘Strip Washing’ Instructions...

If you notice the lining of your nappy repelling liquid, residue build up may be the culprit. ‘Strip washing’ is the process of removing residue from your nappies. It is something that you may never have to do, but helpful to know just in case!

  • Hand wash your nappy with regular dishwashing detergent (cheap stuff is best – make sure it doesn’t have any added moisturisers or the like) to remove any oils.

  • Put a small amount of detergent on the suedecloth.

  • Rub vigorously to scrub the suedecloth.

  • Turn the nappy inside out and repeat.

  • Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.
